Headaches & TMJ: Understanding the Connection

At Oregon Sleep & TMJ, we recognize that headaches often, but not always, accompany TMJ Disorders. We are dedicated to helping you understand your symptoms and manage your headache pain effectively.

Headaches and TMJ Disorders

Morning or Daytime Headaches may result from chronic Bruxism - the clenching and grinding of teeth while asleep or awake. Conservative and reversible therapies such as the use of Dental Orthotics or Physical Therapy can reduce the regularity and severity of headaches, and associated neck problems.

Bruxism-related headaches often present as a dull, aching pain in the temples or around the ear. Migraine headaches are sometimes but not always related to TMJ problems, and other types such as Cluster Headaches may be unrelated. Some people with TMJ disorders may also experience Sleep Apnea, finding significant relief for their TMJ and headaches with treatments like CPAP or Oral Appliances.

Did you know TMJ disorders are
often a hidden cause of chronic,
debilitating morning headaches?

Headache and Sleep Apnea: A Dual Approach

Bruxism is also often present with Sleep Apnea, and many patients will find relief from their Morning Headaches when their Sleep Apnea is well-managed, with Oral Appliance Therapy or CPAP.
